Bobby Doerr

Bobby Doerr was the epitome of quiet excellence, a steady second baseman for the Boston Red Sox who earned nine All-Star selections and a reputation as one of the game’s most respected gentlemen. Over a 14-year career, Doerr hit .288, drove in more than 1,200 runs, and was widely regarded as the best second baseman in the American League during the 1940s. Though his Boston Red Sox only won a single pennant, Doerr made a name for himself with his slick fielding and his consistent bat.
Doerr was known as an effective coach that worked well with his hitters, including Carl Yastrzemski during his triple crown 1967 season. In 1986, Doerr was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans’ Committee.
