Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra

Yogi Berra was a one-of-a-kind figure whose legendary career and unmatched charm made him one of baseball’s most enduring icons. A three-time MVP, 10-time World Series champion, and 18-time All-Star, Berra’s accomplishments as a catcher for the New York Yankees are unmatched. He was the heartbeat of the Yankees' postwar dynasty and a master of clutch performances, both at the plate and behind it. His famous “Yogi-isms”, accidental witticisms like “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”, made him a beloved cultural figure beyond sports.

Berra’s greatness came with a humility that extended to his Black teammates and opponents during the early integration era. He faced Jackie Robinson in numerous heated Yankees, Dodgers World Series matchups and spoke admiringly of Robinson’s drive and determination. Though a fierce competitor, Berra respected Robinson deeply and embraced Black players as peers.

As a manager and coach in later years, Berra continued to build inclusive teams and maintained friendships with players of all backgrounds. His legacy is not only that of a champion but also a humanist, someone who saw people for who they were, not what color they were. Yogi Berra reminded us that baseball is a team game, and that success requires mutual respect, regardless of race or background.
